I liked one of the first classes we had where we had to work for 5 minutes inside, 10 closer to nature, and then 15 completely immersed in nature. So I decided to try that out at my job. I do administrative work and PR work for a company and I need a laptop at all times to do all of my work. But I decided to not use any electronics. I sat at my desk for about 5 minutes and worked on filing some things for my bosses, went in the backroom and tried to get some supplies. The next 10 minutes, I sat in the room before you can go outside and we are required to read a book for some new changes in our company. I have yet to pick up this book until that day. I read and was getting a little distracted because the book is kind of boring, but I got through about 20-30 pages. I decided to read those same pages when I went outside to do the final 15 minutes of the experiment. I didn’t really understand the material the first time around, maybe due to not knowing the fundamentals of it, or just because I was getting distracted, but after going outside, I began to understand. I was able to focus better than I did in the halfway spot, and understand what I was reading. This experiment was great to do again and this time implementing it at my job. I was able to get some work done, without using the internet and still get an assignment done.

I wanted to have another entry about the biophilia and the biophobic scale that we discussed a while ago. I identified as biophilia and I still do, I believe I am a little bit more now after taking this course. I still go out on nature walks and enjoy being out in nature. There have been a few instances that I just had a sense of complete peace come over me while being outside and one was just a couple of days ago. I live on a lake here in San Carlos, and I fish it about 3-4 times a week, depending on how much free time I have. I was out fishing and catching some minnows to feed to our fish and the sun was setting. I am a HUGE fan of sunrises and sunsets and I have been so busy and always on the go that I couldn’t remember the last time I stopped and looked at the sunset. I stopped fishing and just stood there, in awe, of the sun. Most people look directly at the sunset and all its colors, but I actually love to look to the east and see what the sky looks like over there. And there I was, staring at the sky and that is biophilia to me. It isn’t just protecting or respecting, its losing yourself in the nature, and that’s just what happened to me.

I wanted to do another blog entry about a quote that resinated with me this semester. This one is always from the Earth Charter, “Build democratic societies that are just, participatory, sustainable, and peaceful.” I really, really like this quote because I don’t think that people know that building a democratic society and having those values place upon it, is important. We have a democracy and it isn’t all bad, but we aren’t just, we aren’t sustainable, and we aren’t peaceful to everyone in our society. And I don’t think everyone realizes that. If the world is just and peaceful to you, then it doesn’t matter that it isn’t for someone else. And we are going through this right now, and some people are too ignorant to realize that, or just don’t care and refuse to recognize this. But it is so important for us to recognize and want to aspire to be this way in our own societies.

I wanted to have another blog entry about sustainability in our own lives and what we do as individuals to live a sustainable life. I am by no means the best person at this, I try and I sometimes think I do a good job, but at then end of the day, I could always do more. I grow my own green beans, okra, hot and bell peppers, and I grow flowers that attract bees. Which is something not a lot of people would think is important but it is. I recycle, sometimes I question if I am doing it right, and I am too lazy to do the 5 minute research on it. It is so important to be sustainable and to live in that lifestyle, and if you just started by doing it and told people how easy and beneficial it was, the whole neighborhood could do it and from there the town, the state, the country.

One of my favorite quotes from the readings that we did this semester was from the Earth Charter. “Respect Earth and life in all its diversity.” is my all-time favorite quote that we have had to read. This is my favorite quote because it is so simple, yet has so much meaning. Respect is something really big for me, I have always said that respect is the most important thing for us and our world. I like how the quote isn’t just respect life or respect the Earth, it is both, because you shouldn’t have one without the other. Respect the Earth, because we only have one of them, because it deserves respect and its our responsibility to give it just that. Respect life because it is all around us, and it isn’t just referring to the diversity that us humans have in life, it is also referring to all the animals, organisms, and critters that are in our world. We have to respect a fly the same way we respect our neighbors. Not a lot of people understand this and I have always been someone who believes in this way of thought. We are all connected and we all deserve the respect, and through the respect, you can then learn to appreciate them and then want to protect them.

The Waste to Energy plant was really great to finally see, I have heard about it and was excited to finally go there and learn what exactly they do and how they do it. I think it is very sustainable and actually works, but the public is very spectacle and don’t really know about it, and I think that plays a major part in these plants. I think if we did have more of these plants, we would be able to have the proper electricity that we need to function, but I don’t think we should/can just rely on that. It is fairly new to the public and they have questions about whether or not its safe for us to use and for our environment. That is something that needs to be addressed and considered. I think solar and wind is still a great option in terms of sustainability, and the public seems to be more open to use those than the waste to energy. And that’s because it seems more clean and easier to understand than the plants. The cost is about the same, but people will always have a problem with spending more for what seems like less benefits for them.

Discuss the relationship between Nature-Deficit Disorder and Biophobia. Is there a connection? Could interactions with nature help us become biophilic? Include your personal examples for additional support.
I believe there is an connection between the Nature-Deficit Disorder and being biophobic. Being out in nature does help some people focus, but others, it creates more of a distraction. But I believe it will help us become more biophilic. Immersing yourself into nature and letting yourself be free because of it, or putting yourself in nature and doing things you enjoy, will in turn help you go out in it more often. It will help you concentrate more, because when you are used to nature and start to appreciate it, you will want to go into it and it won’t cause that much of a distraction. But there is also the opposite of that, because for me, when I am out in nature, I want to be paying attention to everything that is happening around me, so I get distracted by nature, even though I love and appreciate it.
Teach a Class
I liked the teach a class assignment that I did this past week. I liked having to create the poster and make a visual out of the readings that we discussed. The group I was in, we were talking the entire time about everything we discussed earlier in the class and the poster that we were creating. Just reading doesn’t help me learn, I like doing hands on type of learning, so actually being able to create something from what we read was great. We discussed our majors and how we, in our careers, would be able to help. It was slightly difficult to think of some ideas for the specific poster we were making, but we made it work and they had really great ideas. Listening to them and bouncing thoughts and ideas off of each other was great.

Taking care of our earth is the first step in creating better lives for all who inhabit it. I really liked the “Planting trees to sequester carbon dioxide” poster and idea. Planting two trees for every tree cut down will increase our tree growth and help our atmosphere survive and thrive longer and better than it is now. By restoring our earth, we are giving people a chance to better where we live, which will help them. Our health is affected by our environment and when we take care of it, it takes care of us. Learning how to properly take care of your garden or farm, will help poverty, give them chances at an education. It is 100% worth it financially. We need to invest in our planet, first and foremost, because without it, we have nothing.
